Coiled Basketry Workshop: Saturday 3rd April 2027

Join this full-day workshop with basketmaker Halina Ward and make a decorative bowl with local flag iris leaves.

Halina will be teaching a looped coiled basketry technique that originates in Northeastern Poland, where rye straw was used to make decorative containers, including grain storage vessels, vases and small baskets. Weโ€™ll be working mainly with flag iris leaves, though Halina will also bring samples of other garden-grown plant fibres to try out.

Youโ€™ll leave with a pretty bowl, and the know-how to make more in your own time.

All materials provided.

NB: the technique is suitable for complete beginners but does require a little bit of manual dexterity. It might not be right for you if you have joint problems in your hands โ€“ particularly your left thumb (if right-handed) or your right thumb (if left-handed).

Held at: The Garden Hall, Carshalton.
