The pictures show the opening ceremony for John Fisher School’s Spiritual & Wildlife Garden, led by the Archbishop of Southwark on 22nd June 2021
Hazel Gurr who runs the ‘Greener Schools’ project at EcoLocal was asked by the school to help with the project. Hazel explains, “with the help of another volunteer, Hermione Lovel, we carried out several visits and worked on our design for the area. The school has enthusiastically taken up on the designs and works have moved forward during the Covid lockdown. It is lovely to see the progress they have made”.
The main structure, including a large pond, a grassed area, paths and a raised bed to grow fan trained fruit trees and herbs have been finished. Other features still remain to be added including more shrubs, a new hedge and a rockery and seating areas. Also, in future an outdoor classroom and greenhouse are planned.
Hazel has helped over 100 schools in the London Borough of Sutton and the Borough of Epsom and Ewell over the past 20 years with designs for wildlife areas. She hopes to start visiting schools again in September after being unable to during the past 18months due to Covid. If your school is interested in help with planning a green area, please email Hazel here.
